Is it the peptide on the label?
The sample is separated by liquid chromatography and ionized by electrospray. We compare the observed mass with the theoretical mass of the declared peptide.
How much of what's in the vial is the target peptide?
Reverse-phase HPLC separates the peptide from synthesis by-products and degradation products. Purity is the main peak area as a share of the total peak area at 214 nm.
How many milligrams are actually in the vial?
The whole vial is reconstituted and quantified against a calibration curve built from a reference standard of the same peptide.
Is it contaminated with bacterial endotoxins?
The Limulus amebocyte lysate assay detects endotoxins from Gram-negative bacteria, a common contaminant of poorly handled peptide material.
Does it contain lead, arsenic, cadmium or mercury?
The sample is digested and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for the four elements that matter most in injectable material.
Is there any microbial growth?
The reconstituted sample is filtered and incubated in two growth media for 14 days. Sterility can't be rushed: the incubation time is fixed.
